The human foot is a complex mechanical structure containing 26 bones (forming about 25% of all bones in the body), which are supported by 33 joints and over 100 ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Anatomically, the foot is divided into three primary sections: the hindfoot, midfoot, and forefoot.
Arches
These bones are arranged into three arches that distribute weight and absorb impact:
-
Medial Longitudinal Arch: The highest and longest arch, visible on the inside of the foot.
-
Lateral Longitudinal Arch: A lower, flatter arch on the outside.
-
Transverse Arch: Runs across the midfoot from side to side.
